Properly Disposing of Old Mattress in the Triangle

Have you recently purchased a new mattress but now you are stuck with the task of disposing your old mattress, and you aren’t quite sure what your options are, or how to get rid of something as large as an old mattress?

The good news is if you live in the Raleigh, Charlotte, or Greensboro area you have many options when it comes to disposing of your old mattress. From selling, donating to recycling this article has you covered.

Sell Your Old Mattress

The State of North Carolina does have some strict requirements in regards to sanitizing preowned bedding before selling it unless you are the owner of the bed.  Therefore, selling your mattress may be a great option if your mattress is still in good condition. Believe it or not, some people are looking for good deals on used mattresses!

Donate your Mattress

Donating your used mattress is a great option. However, before you load up your mattress, or call your friend with a truck, call the donation station of your choice to make sure they accept used mattresses first. Due to the strict North Carolina guidelines on old mattress and the space mattresses take up, not all donation stations accept mattresses.

Used Mattress

The following places are a few donation stations in Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro that accept old mattress donations.

Habitat for Humanity  – ReStore in Wake County accept and then sell donated, used mattresses and box springs. The ReStore puts mattresses they receive through a sanitation process from NC Department of Health and Human Services. Through this dry heat sanitation process, the ReStore can kill bed bugs, dust mites, and other living organisms. By sanitizing mattresses and box springs and reselling them, the ReStore can keep mattresses out of landfills, saving valuable space.

Crisis Assistance Ministry located in Charlotte accepts donations of furniture and mattresses and appliances in good condition. The Ministry assists people going through financial crisis and those in need. You can check the website for a full list of what items they do and do not accept.

The Barnabas Network serves the Greensboro area and accepts used furniture, including used mattresses. The Barnabas Network provides basic home furnishings.  These are no cost to the homeless, abused, refugees, and those recovering from flood and fire. You can learn more about how to donate by visiting their website.

Recycle Your Mattress

Scheduling a bulk pick-up with your local waste disposal is an option, however, knowing that over 300 mattresses and box springs into just one landfill each day might make you think twice. The fact is, mattresses don’t break down easily and finding an option to recycle your used mattress saves much-needed space in landfills and is much better for the environment.

For example, Spring Back Mattress Recycling has many locations throughout the United States, one of them is Charlotte, NC. Spring Back employs those who are disenfranchised and who are facing with barriers in the workplace. The program gives employees a second chance and helps the environment through recycling and the break down of old mattress.

Bye-Bye Mattress, founded in 2015 and operated by the Mattress Recycling Council enables you to find a drop-off point for your mattress to be recycled. The Bye-Bye Mattress Council operates in California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.  Though the site has other helpful information available on mattress recycling. For example, a mattress factory in Greensboro, BedEx, makes sustainable mattresses and recycles them well.
