Interior Demolition Tips

Make DIY Interior Demolition Easier With These Tips

Interior demolition is physically demanding work that also requires experience. It’s also the sort of work where you learn from your mistakes so that your next job isn’t as much of a hassle. However, that doesn’t mean that making mistakes is fun. This is especially true in the world of demolition, where you might accidentally break something you weren’t supposed to or smash your knee with a crowbar.

Fortunately, at Junk Doctors, we are demolition experts that have learned a lot from the many projects we’ve taken on. We’re ready to impart some of this knowledge to you—that way, your interior demolition project doesn’t have to cause as many headaches!

Don’t Undervalue Protective Gear

Remember that smashed knee we mentioned earlier? Obviously, nobody likes it when they injure themselves, but there’s a very present risk of self-injury during demolition work. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make this self-injury less likely. We’ve outlined several of these for you below. Take a look—have you been neglecting any of these safety practices?

  • Ear Protection. Demolition work can get loud, especially when you’re swinging around hammers and knocking things over. To protect your hearing, be sure to wear some sort of protective earwear, such as ear plugs or over-the-ear muffs.
  • Eye Protection. Similarly, when flecks of debris are flying every which way, there is a risk that one of them could go soaring into your eye. So make sure that doesn’t happen by wearing protective eyeglasses.
  • Respirator. Some demolition work will send dust flying everywhere, and the last thing you’re going to want to do is breathe it in. Wear a respirator to block the inhalation of these harmful particles.
  • Always Take Caution. Every time you are about to take any kind of action during demolition, stop and think it through. Are any parts of your body in the way? Could something fall on top of you?

Plan Ahead to Avoid Frustration

The last thing you’ll want to do is find yourself halfway through a demolition job and realize that you don’t have all the tools you need. Because of this, it’s good to read up on the work you’re preparing to do and ensure that you have all the right equipment. Take a look at our checklist below. It’s not a comprehensive list of tools that you’ll need for every job, but these are the bare essentials for any demo work:

  • Protective Gear
  • Sledgehammer
  • Pry Bar
  • Utility Knife
  • Screwdrivers
  • Hammers
  • Pliers

Again, be sure to do your research so that you have any tools you might need on top of this! All jobs are different, and if we were to list every demolition tool that you’d ever need, then it would take up this entire article.

Have Proper Clean Up Equipment

Whether you’re doing residential interior demolition or a commercial project, if there’s one thing for certain, it’s that demolition can create one heck of a mess. Dust will blow around, debris will scatter, and other forms of waste are sure to be generated in the process. Because of this, it’s good to have clean up equipment on hand. Consider the following examples:

  • Sheets. Lie these sheets down on the floor to catch dust and debris, and consider putting them over doorways leading to areas outside of the demolition area. That way, dust doesn’t spread to other parts of the property.
  • Broom and Vacuum Cleaner. Being able to sweep up and vacuum the floors will put an end to much of the debris created by your demolition project. Finish this work immediately after the project to eliminate the spread of debris.
  • Garbage Bags. Larger chunks of debris will need to be bagged up and taken away for disposal. Don’t want to pick up all this mess on your own? Try professional junk removal services instead.

Consider Professional Interior Demolition

As we mentioned before, there is always something to learn in the world of demolition. However, the learning curve can be very steep, and sometimes, there are enough challenges for us to overcome in our day-to-day lives. When you don’t want to climb your way to demolition professionalism, you can always find it for hire out and about. For example, companies like Junk Doctors are more than happy to provide you with the interior demolition services you need.

There’s no need to worry about self-injury or cleaning up when a group of experts does all the work for you.
