Greensboro is situated amongst the rolling hills of North Carolina’s Piedmont, positioned halfway in between the state’s Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains to the west and the Atlantic beaches and Outer Banks to the east. The view of the city from the highest building – the Lincoln Financial tower (commonly known as the Jefferson-Pilot Building after the local newspaper) – exhibits an expanse of shade trees within the city. Interstates 40 and 85 intersect at the city, and the planned I-73 is to go through its borders.
Downtown Greensboro has drawn development investment in the past few years with such new construction as Yadkin Bank Park, and residential and offices. The Southside neighborhood downtown reflects central-city reinvestment. The formerly economically depressed neighborhood continues to be redeveloped as an award-winning neotraditional-style neighborhood featuring walkability, compact blocks and local amenities and services. Downtown Greensboro possesses an energetic nightlife with plenty of nightclubs, bars and restaurants. The redevelopment of the downtown was triggered by the 2006 opening of the Elon University School of Law. The law school is recognized with bringing in student dollars to the downtown both night and day.
The Greensboro economy as well as the surrounding Piedmont Triad area, historically has been focused on textiles, tobacco, and furniture. Greensboro boasts an engaged and diverse arts community. Events and venues range from the nationally acclaimed annual Eastern Music Festival to Weatherspoon Art Museum to the cutting edge performances of the Triad Stage theater company.
Greensboro features quite a number of retail shopping from well-known national chains to local boutiques and galleries. Friendly Center, off Friendly Avenue is really an open-air shopping complex showcasing the nation’s largest Harris Teeter supermarket, along with a multiplex cinema. The Shoppes at Friendly Center, alongside Friendly Center, houses many upscale retailers and restaurants. Additional shopping centers are mainly on the West Wendover corridor near I-40 and on Battleground Avenue on the city’s northwest side. A short time ago, “big-box” retailers have grouped at the site of the former Carolina Circle Mall on the city’s northeast side and on the city’s far south along the newly finished Painter Boulevard (I-85). Also on New Garden Road a sizable shopping area has sprouted up in the last couple of years.
Greensboro isn’t presently the location of any top-level professional sports teams.
